He could kick your ass.
David Carradine, star of the 70’s TV Series Kung Fu and more recently of Kill Bill fame was found dead in his Thailand hotel room yesterday.
Whenever I hear the name David Carradine I think back to when I was a kid enjoying the orignal Kung Fu series. Carradine’s charater, Caine, had a pretty big effect on me. He served as a role model and one of my first introductions to eastern culture. There was definitely a mystique to the “Caine” that was different from other martial arts heroes of the time; More of a humble, mythical wanderer sharing and seeking wisdom rather than looking for a fight. His character and the show had less to do with ass-kicking and more to do with the eastern philosophy and wisdom which did wonders for the imagination of a 7 year old boy. I remember wanting to be a Shaolin Monk, going as far as trying out a few of the “18 Chambers” at home. I succeeded at burning the shit out of my forearms trying to pick up a pot of boiling water, and breaking a nose once or twice “sparring” with friends in my parents backyard.
The success and mystique of Caine seemed to shape David Carradine’s acting as a whole. He displayed wisdom and commanded the same respect in most of the movies he has been a part of since Kung Fu. RIP Grasshopper, you will be missed. Oh, and for the record, he could kick Van Damme’s ass with his mind.
