Hudy 14K: How Good Do You Think It Is?

0925090751I went to the Hudy 14K tapping a couple weeks back with some of the fam before going to the Bengals-Broncos crapfest. For some reason or another, I always find myself super-excited, and probably wrongly so, about Moerlein releases of “budget” beers.  You’d think that I’d somehow forgotten that I’m a big ol’ beer snob.

This is likely because I somehow forgot that I’m a big ol’ beer snob.

So, how is Hudy 14K?

Take a guess.

To me, the stuff is pretty dreadful.  At the same time, it’s pretty much in keeping with the whole “budget” beer thing that Moerlein’s going for.  There’s definitely some nostalgia there, just as with the re-release of Hudy Delight a while back, and the subsequent re-releases of Burger and Burger Light.  Based on that, I suppose I can see the value in it, at least because it’s pretty clear that Christian Moerlein is putting in a measurable amount of effort (and seemingly all by themselves) to restore the identity of Cincinnati as a strong beer town.

Admirable as that is, Hudy 14K is still pretty schnasty.  If I’m going the lawnmower beer route, I’m gonna stick with Burger.  Is that saying something?

OK beer snob! 14K is a nice smooth beer for any normal beer drinker, don’t know how else the recipe would have made it through prohibition as well as the closing of our local Hudepohl plants then back on to our shelves and into our fridges again. A brand and a name famous and known in Cincinnati. I’m glad to have my Burger and 14K back as well as the other Moerlein beers but I guess since I enjoy beers that are so much below your standards, that I’m just some “lawnmower beer” man who couldn’t possibly know what good beer tastes like.
